Wash Day-Clay Wash

This is the last wash day of 2015 and I was super excited that it went well. I have decided to try new techniques until I find exactly works for my transitioning hair.  This week I pulled out my Ettenio Detoxify mineral clay and did a clay wash.

Here is how my wash day went:

[1] Detangled with my oil mix before coating my hair from root to tip with my Ettenio Clay wash.  Once hair was completely coated I cover with a plastic cap for 30 minutes to ensure I get the benefits of the clay. After removing the plastic cap I rinsed with warm water.  I got a little worried because of the oil the clay did not rinse clean.



[2] I decided against shampooing and instead opted to deep conditioning.  I deep conditioned with Creme of Nature Argan oil intensive conditioning treatment, under my conditioning cap for 45 minutes. After removing the conditioning cap I allowed my hair to cool for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water and followed up with cool water, then wrapped my head with a t-shirt to get rid of the excess water.

[3] When my hair was 80 percent dry I put into five sections.  I then sprayed each section  with Creme of Nature strength and shine and applied Kinky Curly Knot today and detangled and blow dry on cool. I wanted to try something a little different so I two strand twist before putting in perm rods.

OMG I was so happy with the look, and to top it off my curls lasted through the day.  The feedback that I got was that my hair looked confused but I didn't care because I had bounced and texture.  I loved that my hair was moisturized and will certainly reorder the Ettenio Clay wash.

Motivation- How to beat the Holiday Blues

The holiday season can bring on a bout of stress and depression, which can be tough because it seems as if the whole world is bursting with the holiday spirits.  Just know that you are not alone, the person at the holiday party dancing and seeming to having a great time, might be having a difficult time also. Take comfort that there are ways to deal with holiday blues and in turn finding the holiday spirit.


Keep your expectation  realistic- During the holidays we tend to have unrealistic expectations, and when those expectations fall short we beat up ourselves. Be realistic in your expectations for the holidays and you will enjoy is far more.

Do something different- We all have family and cultural traditions that dominates the holidays but these traditions can become great stressors.  So instead of subjecting yourself to the same ole same, create your own traditions and do something fun or even choose to volunteer during the holidays.

Lean on your support system- This time of year can be especially difficult if you are dealing with depression or grief; don't forget your close friends and family because they are there to get you through the tough times.

Ask for Help- If you are feeling overwhelmed during this season as for help. So if you need help cooking, wrapping the gifts or putting up the lights ask for help from your love ones.

Don't worry about things you can't control- Don't spend your time worry about the things and people you cannot control.  Uncle Tom will get drunk, your sister will bring her new boyfriend, cousin Mary will start singing during dinner these aren't things you can necessarily control.  Just focus on your actions and reactions because those are the only things you can control.


Forget the unimportant stuff! Don't sweat the small stuff, and take time out to enjoy the holidays.

Wash Day- Bantu Knots on Transitioning Hair

This new challenge or path has me feeling like when I first decided to go on a healthy hair journey.  I am spending tons of my time reading blogs and watching YouTube videos on transitioning hair, so I can gain better knowledge.  This movement is truly awesome because I found so much useful information and techniques that I will try, in order to format a regimen for this new path in my journey.

This week I decided to try out an all-in-one wash day; here is how I did it.

[1] First I detangled with my oil mix (coconut, grapeseed, avocado and jojoba oil) before spraying my roots with diluted Crème of Nature Sunflower and Coconut detangling and moisturizing shampoo.  After massaging my scalp with the shampoo, I coated my hair from root to tip with Shea Moisture 10 in 1 renewal Masque, and then I put on a plastic cap and my conditioning cap for 30 minutes. 

After removing the conditioning cap I allowed the hair to cool for 10 minutes, before hopping into the shower to rinses out all the products from my hair. After getting out the shower, I wrapped my head in a t-shirt for 10 minutes to get rid of the excess water.  OMG, my hair felt so soft and moisturized, and the best part was that it felt clean.  This may be my go to wash day routine throughout my transition.

[2] I did the happy dance because this technique did not leave hair looking and feeling horrible. Once I was finished my dancing I put my hair into five sections and applied Kinky Curly Knot today and ORS coconut milk anti-breakage serum detangled and blow dry on cool.  I’m trying not to use any heat because I don’t want my hair to become heat trained. 

[3] Elasta QP olive oil and mango butter moisturizer and Eco Styling Gel and put into Bantu Knots; I think I had about 16 or 19 knots.  I don’t remember it being so difficult to go the knots, but the right side of my head gave me a hard time, this may be due to me being left handed.  Anyway in the morning all the knots were still in place so I guess I did a good job. 

I don’t know if it was the Eco styling gel, the size of each knot or that I’m six months post but the curls were so tight and did not fall even at the end of the day.  I think it was a combination of both but I’ll am in love with the look and since curls are my go to look for this transition, I’ll be doing much more.

Motivation- Forgive Yourself

Understanding the importance of forgiveness and how to accomplish it in your life is at times a hard concept for us. Even though we may know the meaning of forgiveness and have to the ability to forgive others, we tend to lack forgiveness of yourselves.  Making the choice to forgive you, is not an easy task, however it is very important in order to live an enriched life. 

We have all messed up at one time or the other because to err is human; so why is it so hard to forgive you?  When we hurt a love one we walk around with the guilt and constantly beat ourselves up long after the person as forgiven us and moved on.   Why do we hold ourselves more accountable than we would someone else? The inability to forgive you can lead to depression, anger and self-hate.

If you look in the mirror and is unable to look yourself in the eye, then it is time to forgive you and learn to love yourself.  Forgiving yourself is allowing you to accept the past and the freedom to live a fulfilled life in the present.  Forgiving does not mean your forget but instead that you learned from the mistake and is using it in a positive way.  Forgiving ourselves is about letting go of the hurt, the anger and pain.


So look yourself in the mirror and forgive you by telling yourself to take less offense, let go of the anger, let go of the hurt, stop placing blame; instead open your mind in order to have a greater understanding of the situation.

2015 Noteworthy Postings

2015 was the year to try many new products, styling and to really take my hair journey to the next level.  This year I did crochet braids, box braids, tried a braid out, did a few Bantu knots and made the ultimate decision to transitioning to natural.  The best part (or at least for me ) of being a member of this community (healthy hair) is the connections I have made with people and continue to make. 

Noteworthy Post of 2015

  • I’m transitioning, -thanks for all the encouragement I really from you all.  I have toyed with the decision for close to a year and I figure if I announced it to the universe then I can’t allow self-doubt to take hold.
  •  How I wash my crochet braids- This was the most popular post in 2015; which is really awesome, because I could not predict it. When I first took my handy dandy notebook (Google) to look for how to wash my crochet braids I found one You-tube video, I was stunned.  One would figure with the popularity of crochet braids there would be much more out there on how to care for it.
  • How I moisturized my crochet braids (second most popular)- Like I said there are tons of videos and blog post on how to install them but caring for them got lost somehow.
  • My best wash day is a toss-up between Soft and Fluffy curls and Co-wash spiral both of these wash days were so easy I felt like I was in an alternate universe. 
  • My favorite post is Ten hair care items to pack when travelling  I love this post because it gets me into the vacation mode.  I love travelling so anything to do with travel has my attention.
  • My worst wash day is a toss-up between The struggle is real and Free at Last, both of this wash days put me to the test and almost had me throwing in the towel.
  • My blog celebrated one year OMG When I started this blog I had no clue what I was doing. Even now as I’m writing this I am amaze that I figured it out and have maintained it.  This blog is and was my saving grace in more ways than one.  I have a place to be my authentic self which lends itself to me taking better care of me. 
  • Honorable mention- How I moisturize my box braids- I like this post because even though most of us do protective styles, there aren’t much out there on the interwebs (in my opinion) on caring for protective styles such as box braids. How I prep my hair for box braids- Prepping your hair before any long-term protective style is really important.

Wash Day- I'm Six months post

Yeah!!!! I’m six months post relaxer; just can’t believe I actually was able to get here.  When I started on my quest in June it was to challenge myself but it actually gave me the boost to transition to natural.  I love this journey and the challenges it brings.  I have yet to see a define curl pattern but the natural hair is soft and manageable.

This wash day was a breeze, given the fact that I am 26 weeks post relaxer with roughly three inches of new growth.  Detangling the natural hair is a breeze but I have wicked tangled on the ends. I am due for a trim but I won’t do one until I flat iron my hair.



Anyway here is how my wash day went;

Prepoo- Detangled using warm coconut and olive oil, then saturate the hair with the mix and put on a plastic cap and my conditioning cap for 45 minutes.  I haven’t used olive oil in a while and I wanted to combat any dryness before they occur. 

Shampoo- Lathered twice with Crème of Nature Sunflower and coconut detangling and moisturizing shampoo.  I had to lather twice before of the hot oil treatment and that the hair still felt greasy after the first lather.  I then rinsed my hair with warm water before wrapping my head in a t-shirt when I was finished shampooing.


Deep Conditioning- Deep conditioned with Ettenio Cocolicious balancing penetrating conditioner and Jamaican Black Castor Oil without heat for two hours. I then hopped in the shower and rinsed out the conditioner with warm water, then wrapped my head with a t-shirt to dry. I had the t-shirt on for a good ten minutes the applied my leave-in.




Leave-in and Moisturizer- Sprayed my hair with Crème of Nature Strength and shine left to air dry. When it was about 90 percent dry I applied Kinky Curly Knot today detangler and leave-in and ORS Coconut milk serum and put into five sections.  I then blow dry each section on warm.

Styling- I did a Perm rod set with close to thirty rods and went to bed.  in the morning I had beautiful bouncy curls and my roots were stretch, it even look like I had only one texture/


I love how soft and fluffy the hair looks and feels but I’m struggling with my afternoon hair.  It has been so warm in the northeast that my hair is behaving as if it summer, the humidity is giving me a run for my money.  I am still learning or t least attempting to style the hair in a way that it last thru the end of the day.

Hit and Misses 2015

The year 2015 was a very exciting and trying year for me; not only when it comes to my hair but for my health and my career. I am very happy for the supports I receive from all my readers and I hope to not only inspire you in 2016 but also that you continue to inspire me.

My tried and true techniques remained a hit but I have also added a few more hits to my arsenal in 2015. My misses weren’t many this year when it comes to products but learnt very valuable lessons when it comes to what my hair likes.

Hit: Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor oil Strengthen Grow & Restore Treatment masque- This is an awesome conditioner it not only offers the benefits of Jamaican Black Castor oil, but it also has Shea butter as its team member.  This conditioner has the best of both worlds in my book, it has strength and it is also moisturizing. Hit: Shea Moisture 10 in 1 Renewal System Masque- I love this Masque it leaves my hair feeling so soft and moisturized. I am so in love with this masque, I have used it as a deep conditioner and as a wash out conditioner and still get the same amazing results. See my review here

Hit: Jamaican Black Castor Oil- I heard so much rave about how great this oil is and to tell you the truth they are all truth at least for me. I used it in my deep conditioner, I use it seal my leave-in and at times I use it in my prepoo, so far it works fabulous no matter how I use it. 


Hit: Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter moisturizer- This moisturizer is the bomb I am totally in love with it. This is a thick and creamy moisturizing dream, it melts in your hair leaving it feeling and looking moisturized.  See my review here


Miss: QGX awapuhi ginger shampoo- This conditioner left my hair  feeling so hard that I wish I’d kept the receipt. I seen so much rave about this line and really wanted to try it out, but I the good feeling only lasted a day or two.  I think the problem is that it contains protein, but who knows.  I would love to regift so if anyone wants to try it, email me and I glad pass it along.  


Miss: Almond Oil- This oil had my hair shedding so bad that not even weekly black tea rinses helped.  I decided to re-gift the bottle I had and the recipient says it works wonders on her hair and is even enjoy more hair growth than normal.  That just goes to prove not everything works for everyone.

Musing- What I learned 2015

This year has been a very challenging year for me personally.  I had to rely on my faith to get me through the difficult times.  I have come to realize that my healthy hair journey has many similarities with my life and like a prison sentence they are running concurrently. 

Let go and Let God- Too often we find ourselves trying to control a situation or even an outcome to no avail.  The reason behind the failure to do so is not up to us; therefore say a prayer and allow God to work in your life.  I learned that no matter what excuses we use to stay in a situation God will take us out of it willingly or not.

Positive attitude will attract positive- A positive attitude goes a long way and it attracts positive outcomes.  When God takes us out of a situation do not sit around and lament on why me; instead welcome the change with a positive outlook and he will reveal the great things he has plan for your life.

Leave the energy and life force suckers in your dust- Too often we let others thoughts and feelings dictate how we feel and in turn we allow them to rob us of our joy.  This year I was forced with the unmasked truth that I was allowing “a person” to suck my energy.  Making the decision to cut that person out my life was a very rewarding decision.

Open up yourself to new experiences- Opening up one’s self to new experience can have great rewards.  This year I made a decision to start dating again and it was a great learning experience.  I learned a lot about the dating world and also about myself. Don’t be afraid to step off the curb and try something new; because what is life without a little excitement?

My motto or mantra is Laugh Loud, Laugh Often.  Laughter has helped me to get through the tough times and it is quite cathartic to have a real hard belly laugh.


I hope you learned some value lessons in 2015, which will help you to conquer 2016 and all the other years to come.

Wash Day- Transitioning Trials

This transitioning journey is not for the faint of heart, it is for people with tenacity.  Last week was my first foray into dealing with and styling my almost six months post new growth on top of my texlaxed hair.  I am very happy that I spent the last two years stretching my relaxer and texlaxing my hair because it has given me the tools for this arduous journey.  I won’t be attempting any braids outs, twist outs or flat twist anytime soon, because I don’t have the skill and I refuse the go to work looking like a crazy person.



After a week of trial and error here is how this week’s wash day went:

Prepoo and Detangled- Detangled in small sections using my oil mix. This oil mix contains coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil and jojoba oil.  After I detangled each section I coated it with OGX Brazilian Keratin Therapy conditioner; when my whole head was finished I put on a plastic cap and my conditioning cap. I felt that my hair need a little protein and this conditioner has the right balance for me. I left the conditioning cap on for thirty minutes before removing it and allowing my hair to cool.

Shampoo- Once my hair was cool; I hopped into the shower to rinse out the prepoo treatment and shampoo.  I shampooed in two sections using my all-time favorite Crème of Nature Sunflower and Coconut conditioning and detangling shampoo.  I know most of us don’t shampoo our hair frequently but if you need to like me, this is a very good shampoo and relatively inexpensive.

Deep condition- To get rid of the excess water I wrapped my head in a t-shirt for about five minutes.  Then I applied my deep condition mixture of Crecepelo conditioner and Jamaican Black Castor oil very liberally.  I did this because my hair was feeling a bit hard after the protein prepoo section.  I then put on a plastic cap and sat under my bonnet dryer for twenty minutes.  My intention was to let me hair cool for another twenty minutes but I end up on the phone with my cousin who lives in London for almost an hour.  I love catching up with her; but it always makes me smile when the American, British and Jamaican accents comes to play. 


Leave-in and Moisturizer- I then hopping back in the shower to rinse out the conditioner and then wrapped my hair with a t-shirt to dry.  I let it dry for roughly fifteen minutes before applying Kinky Kurly Knot today leave-in detangling and OGX Coconut milk anti-breakage serum to small sections.  Do you ever look at your wet hair and have that feeling of OMG how do I fix this ish?  Well, I was in that place and it is a scary place.

Styling- Enough of my drama, after taking deep breaths I decided to blow dry so I can have a smooth starting point.  Therefore I blow dry each section (about six) on warm, then moisturized with Cantu Hair Lotion and put in close to thirty flexi rods and went to bed.  Let me tell you after the blow dry I was in a better place. 

I love the fullness of my hair and how soft and fluffy it is, I’m just a little disappointed that I haven’t seen any curl pattern.  To say it is a surprising would be a lie; the one problem I had with my new growth back in the days was that it doesn’t lay flat and would just poof up.  I have since embraced it and Curly-Sue is here to play and stay.

Motivation- Embrace your Situation

As the good book (Bible) says "there is a time and place for everything"; Embrace your situation.

We aren't always met with great things, and sometimes the things we are met with are so shitty it throws us for a loop. However finding the message in every situation is the key to unlocking the true meaning of our lives. We often ask, why me? but my question to you is; why not you?

Life isn't full of roses and quiet walks through the lush gardens, however that doesn't mean we should miss out on finding the meaning in the turbulent times. If you are in a bad place use it as a stepping stone to move to the next chapter in your life. If this is the good part take solace in the good things and use the knowledge you gain to help you through the not so good times.

Nothing is ever what it seems; what looks bad today could be a blessing tomorrow.

Weight Loss - In Review (November)

The year is coming to an end and I'm still hustling to achieve my goals before year end.  I am loving my fitness level but is hating that my weight loss seems to be at a stand still.  I will continue to do what I am currently doing and will make changes in the new year to boost my weight loss.

My diet and exercise for November went down like this.......

Diet-

  • Had a balance breakfast each morning. Breakfast included protein, carb and fruits.
  • Prepare and packed my lunch, making sure that I include protein, a carb and vegetables
  • Had a snack between breakfast and lunch and a snack between lunch and dinner.
  • I have a light dinner with the exception of Sunday which is our weekly family dinner.
I was super pump that I am totally back on track with my diet program.

Exercise-

  • Loving my fitbit it keeps me motivated; on average I walked 10,000 steps per day
  • I exercise five days per weeks without failure
    • two days of cardio sculpt
    • a day of total body weight training and Pilates
    • a day dedicated to kickboxing
    • an arms day because this girl needs sexy arms.
  • I am working on getting back into running but my knee is not co-operating so I only ran twice this month.
Results-

  • I did not lose any weight not even an ounce; my pounds of fat is now my pounds of muscles. 
  • I have lost inches which is good; my ultimate goal is o be small so losing inches is a great thing.
  • My BMI hasn't change per my scale but I won't give up.
I am not letting not losing weight this month take away my motivation.  This is a lifestyle and I intend to continue until I hit my goal weight.  These days I can train for two plus hours at the gym and do not feel like a walking dead.  I get compliments from people regarding ho much weight I lost and that I shouldn't lose more.  Even though I appreciate the compliments this is my new normal.
