Motivation- Saying NO!

It can be a difficult task to say "no" but it is a very critical skill to master in order to protect your mental wellbeing.  Saying no does not mean or uncaring it just means that you are turning down a specific request for your time and energy. If you do not learn to say no you will be miserable, and even resentful.

When you try to please everyone you tend to lose sight of your priority and Whenever you say "yes"when you wanted to say "no" they become like unwanted ticks that keep you up of night.   We all have found ourselves awake at night second guessing our decision to help or take on another task just because we are afraid of being deemed mean.

Questions you should ask yourself before saying "yes"

  • Do I have the time for this?
  • Am I the best person for this?
  • Will accepting this request cause me harm?
  • Am I willing to sacrifice my priority and goals?

If you find that find that your answer to any of the questions is not agreeable to you; maybe best bet to  turn that person's request. Turning down the request should not be done in a manner to is rude or inappropriate.

Simple rules and ways to say no

  • No, Thank you- A respectful and gracious answer is more often than not well received.
  • I'll get back to you or I'll let you know-  Will appease the other party and also give you time to consider if this is something you want to do.
  • Do not apologize- We tend to start off with "I'm sorry" when we are telling someone no, and even though it may sound polite it gives the appearance that you are at fault.
  • Be nice to yourself-  Say "yes"all the time does not make you a nice person, it just means that you will become an easy target.
  • Practice saying "no"-  we've all heard the term "practice makes perfect"; the more say no the easier it will become, and the less anxiety you will have after saying no.
  • Know when yes is the better response- There are times when we will have to put aside our own feelings even when it will inconvenience you because you care about the people you love and you want them to feel loved.
It is sad that as human beings we have limitations, but it is also very freeing to accept these limitations. You have only one chance to share your life, your time, your energy and your love, so don't go saying yes to every little thing.  Say no so you can say yes and therefore accepting your limitation and securing your sanity.

Wash Day- Fluffy Curls

Maintain healthy hair is about the right regimen along with the products that works for you.  I am constantly on the hunt for great deep conditioner, and Shea Moisture out did themselves again (at least in my book) with the 10 in 1 renewal system masque; see my review here.  This hair masque is definitely on my top three list of must haves.

Here is a recap of this week's wash day:

Prepoo- Prepoo with my Cantu Shea butter leave-in conditioning repair cream, coconut oil, avocado oil and grapeseed oil mix under my conditioning cap for 15 minutes.  This prepoo combination works wonders for my hair and is my number one prepoo treatment.

Shampoo-After rinsing out the prepoo treatment I shampooed with Creme of Nature Red Clover & Aloe shampoo, as usual I only lather once before rinsing with warm water.  I bought this shampoo by accident but it works wonders and leave my hair feel soft and clean.

Deep Conditioned- Deep conditioned using the Shea Moisture Superfruit complex 10 in 1 renewal system hair masque under the conditioning cap for 30 minutes, then allowed my hair to cool for another 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water followed by cool water. This product left my hair feeling and loving so soft and moisture that I could not stop touching it.  This will certainly be in my deep conditioner rotation.

Leave in conditioner and moisturizer-  After t-shirt dry for 5 minutes I put my hair in four sections then applied Shea Moisture JBCO strengthen, grow and restore leave-in conditioner and allowed to air dry for 10 minutes.  I then applied Ettenio Mangoshea moisturizer, OGX coconut milk anti breakage serum to each section.  To get my nice fluffy curls I set each section with five to six orange flexi rods and left to dry overnight.

All in all it was a great wash day and I'm loving the results.

Product Review- Shea Moisture 10 in 1 Renewal System Masque

Cost- $12.99 , (this line is widely available)

Claims/Blurb- This intensive oxidant rich treatment helps to perfect and renew vibrancy to brittle lackluster hair.  When used weekly with out 10 in 1 Renewal System, it treats damaged hair while providing anti aging benefits, color protection, hydration, nourishment,  rejuvenation, strength, anti stress, deep conditioning, softness and shine. Counteract signs of aging by nourishing the scalp with our superfruit complex and infusing hair with ultra moisturizing Marula Oil and Biotin.

Ingredients- Water, Cetyl alcohol, cocos nucifera (coconut oil), benentrimoniu methosulfate, Glycerin (vegetable), Butyrospermum Parkii (shea) butter, Stearyl Alcohol, Sclerocarya Birrea seed oil, Behentrimonium chloride, Panthenol, Biotin, Cetrimonium chloride, Persea Gratissima (avocado) oil, Mangifera Indica (mango) seed butter, fragrance (essential oil blend)

Pros- This is one amazing masque!!!! It leaves my hair feeling so soft and light, shiny, bouncy ( trust me the heavens opened and the angels sang) and gorgeous.  This a very thick masque and a little goes a long way but the smell is to die for.  The first couple of times I use it as a rinse out conditioner on my co-wash days and the results was great. It gave humidity its walking ticket  and my hair stayed moisturized for days. I must say the results did not change it I used it as a deep conditioner or a rinsed out conditioner.

Cons-  I personally did not find any con with this product.  There are a few review online documenting cons.

My take-  I love the smell and even though it is thick it is very easy to wash out.  I am loving that I can use it as a rinsed out or a deep conditioner and is still able to achieve the same results.  As with all Shea Moisture products this does not contain the bad stuff however there are a few ingredients that I have to research to find out the benefits.  All in all this particular product has some really good ingredients and will be part of my summer arsenal to combat the dreaded humidity.

Have you used this product; what is your take?

Motivation- Dealing With Grief

Recently my mom her sisters lost their dad and their behaviour seems to be off the charts during and after making his final preparations.  This had me thinking, " what are the signs of grief" and "how does grief affects the body?"  We tend to think of grief as acting in an emotional manner, but grief can also affects us physically.

What are signs of grief?

  • Exhaustion- One of the most common symptom of grief is prolong exhaustion or even confusion.  This feeling of exhaustion will leave a person not being able to perform routine daily exercises such as bathing, getting dress, because all they want to do is to sleep to try to recoup their energy.
  • Poor appetite or overeating- Grief can leave you feeling so out of balance that you can either overeat or have not appetite at all. This is a physical symptom of grief which should pass once we work through our grief.
  • Listlessness- Is also a physical symptom of grief and like poor appetite it should also pass. It is a way for the body to deal with the dark cloud of grief.
  • Pain - We've all heard of broken heart syndrome; but grief can bring on less severe pain such as headache, chest pains or even numbness.
  • Crying- Is on of the classic signs of grief.  We have all have the moments where grief leaves us crying uncontrollable.
  • Impulsive behaviours- When one is faced with severe grief they tend to become impulsive. The I have "only one life to live behaviour" can lead one to take risk that they would normally take in order to make sense of their new reality.

How to manage and cope with grief?

  • Turning to friends and family who care about you during a difficult period can help boost the self. Do not push away the help and support of your love ones because they have your well being at hand.
  • Draw comfort from your faith , because it will offer you the solace that can help you manage and cope with a grief.
  • Look after your physical self while your work through the murky area that is grief.
  • If you find yourself feeling or experience any of these symptoms in a manner that is overwhelming it is best to contact a professional to help work through it.
  • Medication such as antidepressant can help with the overly oppressive emotional and physical symptoms of grief.
Facing your feelings of loss and grief can be a daunting undertaking but turning to friends, finding support groups, journaling, turning to the experts or even using medications are all tools that can help you to get through the difficult time.

There is not timeline to when you should stop grieving but take care of your physical health while you work through your grief.  We all know that grief does not affect all of us in the same way, however we can all get out from the weight of crushing grief.

Wash Day- Clarifying Treatment

My hair has become very dull and was not holding any curls; therefore this week I decided to clarify it using a Ettenio Purity shampoo. Even though it is recommended that you should clarify your hair once per month I never saw I necessary to do so because I clarify after each relaxer touch up. I believe the product build up I am currently experiencing is due to the frequent co-washes.

Anyway here is how this week's wash day went;

[1] Shampooed twice with Ettenio Purity sulphate free Clarifying shampoo.  My hair was so product laden that the first wash did not lather, therefore I have to shampoo twice.  This shampoo has great ingredients such as Apple cider vinegar and aloe vera juice but it stink to high heavens.

[2] Deep Conditioned with Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, grow and restore treatment masque and coconut oil under a plastic cap and head tie for thirty minutes. After allowing my hair to cool I rinse with warm water, and finished off with cool water after all the product was properly rinsed out.   I then wrapped my hair in a t-shirt to get rid of the excess water.

[3] After removing the t-shirt I sprayed my hair with Strength and shine leave in conditioner and allowed to air dry to 90 percent. Then applied Ettenio Moisture Reign and Ettenio Mangoshea daily moisturizer before roller setting.

I was not very happy with how my hair felt, I felt dry and looked a little frizz therefore I add a few drops of Jamaican Black Castor Oil and a few squirts of Avon Lotus shield frizz control and set with my 1 1/2 inch perm rods. I loved the results of adding the JBCO and the frizz control.

I wished I had the chance o take pictures but I was leaving for a three day emergency trip but I must say that my hair maintain it's moisture level even in the hot Caribbean.

- use the breast from the chicken to make sandwich, which included onion, cucumber, spinach and avocado spread).

Exercise-

- This week I average 8,852 steps in a seven day period not bad but certainly needs improvement
- Ran five miles on Friday with an average of 12 minutes per mile.
- Did two days of cardio sculpt using dailyburn.com

All in all I must say my fitness and nutrition are on point and I intend to continue to make both my main focus.

Wash Day- Two Weeks Post

When I first began my healthy hair journey I could not wait for my next wash day, because I wanted to put into practice all the new techniques I learnt. These days wash days feels like just another chore; don't get me wrong I still enjoy putting into practice all that I have learn. However, it can get tiring between prepoo, shampoo, deep conditioning and moisturizing, but I would not slack off for all diamond in the world.

Here is a recap of this week's wash day:

Prepoo- Prepoo with a mixture of coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil and Cantu shea butter leave in repair conditioner under a plastic cap for 20 minutes. This combination has worked wonders for me especially in the last few weeks.

Shampoo- After rinsing out the prepoo treatment I shampooed with Creme of Nature red clover and aloe shampoo.  As usual I only lather once before rinsing with warm then wrapped my head with a t-shirt to get rid of the excess water.

Deep Conditioner- Deep conditioned with Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor oil Strengthen, Grow and Restore treatment Masque under a plastic cap for 30 minutes. After removing the plastic cap I allowed my hair to cool before rinsing with warm water followed by cool water to close the cuticles.  I love this treatment Masque and it will become a staple in my regimen.

Leave-in and Moisturizer- After rinsing out the deep conditioner I wrapped my hair in a t-shirt for ten minutes. I sprayed my hair with Creme of Nature strength and shine leave-in in conditioner then applied Ettenio Mangoshea daily moisturizer and OGX coconut milk anti-breakage serum.

Roller setting is and will remain my go to method for stretching and dry my hair after a wash.  This wash day I roller set with roughly 20 2 1/2 inch rollers overnight.  When I removed the rollers my hair was shiny, soft, moisturized and bouncy.

I am loving the look, feel and health of my hair and will continue on this journey of healthy long hair.

What are some of your go to practices?
