Weight loss- April/May In review

The first 27 1/2 days of April cruised by with everything on track but we all know that in ife the wheels can fall off the wagon without any notice; which was what happened to me. May was a very interesting month for me because I exercised more than i have at any point in my life. I am happy to say that I achieved and surpass my goals. Since I did not take the time to evaluate April's results I rolled my goals from April into May.

Goals

  • Exercise five days per week
  • prepare healthy meals
  • work on running a 12 minute mile
  • lose five pounds, lose an inch from my waist and lower my BMI by one point

Exercise Recap

My exercise for April was pretty the normal to what I have been doing for the last few months. I did body pump, pilates once per week and ran at least 2 miles on those days. On the days I did not visit the gym I used dailyburn.com to get in my exercise for the day.  I am loving dailyburn.com because it offers such a wide variety of exercise programs and not the cookie cutter ones found on dvd.  These sections leaves me feel like I was in a gym with a live instructor.

With nothing but time on my hand May was a go big or go home month for me.  I ran 3-5 miles five days per week, did body pump twice per week, did pilates once per week and did a yoga session each saturday to relax my overused muscles. I was working out twice per day and had more energy than the energizer bunny.  Running outside first thing in the morning is like medicine to the soul.

Results
  • I lost 8 pounds which is just fantastic for me that is an average of 4 pounds per month; to say I am elated is an understatement.
  • lost 1 1/2 inch from my waist; as the Jamaicans say my "coca cola bottle shape" is in touching distance.
  • my BMI is down 2 points; this means that my body is getting leaner by the minute.
  • I exercise five days per week with fail; I am so proud of myself and my persistence.
  • I was finally able to achieve my goal of running on average a 12 minute mile, I guess running daily will build your stamina
  • preparing healthy meals for me and my family has become a lifestyle which will not change anytime soon.
  • my blood pressure is still under control without any medication which is a direct results of eating healthy and having a active lifestyle.

Who would have thought that me of all people would enjoy running, certainly not me.  Running outside is so calming; you are able to enjoy the scenery, your music and focus on your breathing without the distraction of the person on the treadmill next to you.

My goals going forward will remain the same because they are realistic goals and they work for me.

I am seriously thinking about getting a fitness tracker such as fitbit, what are your thoughts suggestions?

Wash Day- The beat Goes On

I love when my hair is behaving ho I want it to  and the past few weeks she was on her very best behaviour.  I am currently 10 weeks post relaxer and roughly 80 percent of my hair is texlaxed with the humidity rising, therefore moisture is in the forefront. Yes at the end of the day my hair is bigger but it is soft and moisturized.  So this wash day I played around with the protein/moisture balance to keep this trend going.

Here is how I went about my wash day;

Prepoo with Profectiv Mega growth Deep conditioner, avocado oil and grapeseed oil under my conditioning cap for 45 minutes. The last time i used this conditioner my hair was hard so I figure I would use it as a protein treatment.   I have had success with using protein in the prepoo phase of my wash day, so I was not worried.  After rinsing out the mix my hair was a little hard but it also felt strong.

Shampoo- After rinsing out the prepoo mix I shampooed Creme of Nature Red Clover & Aloe.  As usual I only lathered once before rinsing with cool water and wrapping my head in a towel.

Deep Conditioner-  Deep conditioned with ORS replenishing conditioner and Jamaican Black Castor Oil mix under my conditioning cap for one hour and then allowed to cool for another half hour.  Once my hair was cool I rinsed out the mix with warm water followed by cool water, which closes the cuticles.  Once I was finished I wrapped my head in a t-shirt for ten minutes.  When I removed the t-shirt I was in hair heaven and hair not only felt soft and moisturized but it looked moisturized.

Leave-in and moisturizer- Applied Creme of Nature strength & shine and Ettenio moisture milk.  Spritz my with lottabody setting lotion and roller set with roughly 1 1/2 and 2 inch rollers.  I an loving the lottabody setting lotion because it gives my hair the hold it needs for my curls to last without making the hair stiff.

After I removed the rollers I apply Ettenio seal and shine. Cloud nine take me away because my hair was so nice and soft that I couldn't keep my hands out.  Because I has been so humid I had big puff hair at the end of day.  So I spritz lightly with lottabody setting lotion and set with close to 25 1 inch perm rods.

The curls were so delicious and I didn't care that the hair got bigger and puffier each day. I am loving my hair and the challenges and triumphs that it is giving me.

How do you combat humidity?

Egg, Honey & Coconut Oil Treatment

I have been toying with the idea of making my own protein treatment for awhile but since my sister is the scientist in the family I have pushed the idea to the side.  Well, after much debate and research I decided to give it ago.

Since I have being battle moisture maintenance issue I figure I should incorporate ingredients that will give me the ideal protein and moisture balance.  The ingredients I choose were egg, honey and coconut oil.

Benefits of Egg

The main component in egg is protein.  Protein helps to strengthen the follicle and cuticle of the hair.  Applying raw egg to hair will smooth the cuticles and strengthen the hair, therefore reducing breakage and split ends.

Benefits of Honey

Honey is an emollient, meaning it is a natural softener. Honey is also an humectant, which simply means it helps to preserve the moisture balance. It is also an antioxidant, an antibacterial and a antiseptic all of which helps to stimulate and restore health to the scalp.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a penetrating oil, simply put it penetrates the cortex of the hair. Coconut oil promotes scalp health and will moisturize  and soften dry hair plus add shine. It is said to prevent breakage, hair loss, split ends and contributes to longer healthy hair.

Recipe
1 egg
2 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoon Coconut oil
Can be adjusted based on the length of your hair.

In a bowl mix all the ingredient together until properly incorporated. Then slowly and thoroughly apply the mixture to the hair from root to tip.  Let the mixture set for 15-20 minutes ideally under a plastic cap before rinsing with cool or cold water.  You can then continue the rest of your normal wash day routine.

I have used this a prepoo but I think you can add conditioner to it and use it as a deep conditioner.  As a side note don't use warm water because it will cook the egg and leave pieces in the hair.

Wash Day- Soft and Fluffy

The chase of the soft moisturized tresses is always on, therefore this week was no exception.  I really wanted to recreate the lovely feeling I had last week.  Since, I was not going to do a protein treatment two weeks in a row I focused on using products that are moisturizing.

Here is how I went about this weeks wash day.

Prepoo- Detangled with warm coconut oil and prepoo with Cantu conditioning repair leave in cream and avocado oil mix under my conditioning cap for 45 minutes. I love using the Cantu repair cream as a prepoo because I get the benefit without it weighing my hair down.

Shampoo- After rinsing out the prepoo mix, I shampooed with Creme of Nature Red Clover & Aloe.  As usual I only lather once before rinsing out with warm water.  I like this shampoo even though it doesn't lather as much but it does leave my hair feeling clean and moisturized.

Deep Condition- Deep conditioned with ORS replenishing Conditioner and Jamaican Black Castor Oil mix under my conditioning cap for an hour.  Since I have being adding JBCO to my conditioner I have noticed that the amount of shedded hair is less and also that my hair appears fuller and thicker. Once I rinsed out the conditioning mix I t-shirt dry for ten minutes; I could not stop running my hands through my hair because it felt so soft and moisturized.

Leave-in conditioner and Moisturizer- Applied Creme of Nature strength & shine leave in conditioner, followed by Ettenio Moisture milk. I don't normally roller set my hair wet but I wanted to have big fluffy hair so I sprayed my hair with Lottabody setting lotion and roller set with twenty-two 1 1/2 inch rollers.  Then sat under my bonnet dryer for and hour.

Well let me tell you my hair was so soft and fluffy I could not believe that it was my hair.  The moisture level was something I have not experienced in a very long time.  I think the protein treatment from last week was the catalyst so I'll certainly add more protein treatment to my regimen.

Motivation- What keeps me motivated!

The glass half full

When faced with adversity do you lament over the lack of or do you use it as a spring board to move forward.  I have always been the glass half full kind of girl, so losing  my job at the end of last month served me well.  I took this change in my employment status as a sign from God that a change is needed in my life.  I am not particularly religious however, I am deeply spiritual.  I too like Daniel and Abraham, have always put my faith in God and trust that he will work in my life for the greater good.

Five ways to stay Motivated

Take Action- When a problem arises do not focus on the problem instead focus on the solutions.  So like in my case instead of asking why I was a part of the cut, I set out to network with people and companies that will help me to find a new job.  Moreover, I now have the chance to find a job I love.

Meditate- When we are feeling out of sorts our mind is the first to join this whirlwind, and we lose the ability to breath deeply.  These are the times when you should find a quiet place close your eyes inhale and release your breath slowly.  Meditation will not only relax the body but will also relax the mind and allow you to think positive.

Seek Support- In today's society we tend to shoulder our burdens all by ourselves. However, seeking help from your family and friends can and will help you to stay positive and motivated.  Often they are able to offer a solution that you weren't or didn't think of.  So don't suffer alone because your love ones wants to see you happy.

Let go of Negativity- Let go of negative thoughts, feelings and people.  Too often we hold to the bad, which does not leave room for the good.  Don't let self doubt and negative people erode your chance to be happy and fulfilled.  Instead fill your life with people who will build up your self confidence and who value you and want to see you succeed.
Celebrate your accomplishments- Whether big or small celebrate each accomplishment.  In my case every time I get an interview I celebrate, because they are a stepping stone to what I seek to accomplish.  Do not overlook a gain just because it wasn't what you set out to do.  Giving yourself a pat on the back will  keep you going and keep you motivated.

A great speaker once asked "what's in your hand?' Don't lament over what's missing but instead use what you have to achieve it.  Keeping oneself motivated and positive can be trying at time but remember positive actions will garner positive results.

Skin Care Regimen Update

I am a makeup wearer; and I don't mean mascara and lipgloss.  On average a minimum of five days per week I have a full face makeup.  Therefore, I need to ensure that my kin is cleansed and moisturized properly on a daily basis.  I have been blessed with great skin so I to do everything keep it that way.

My daily skincare regimen has a morning and night time routine.  In the mornings I cleanse, followed by a cleansing toner before applying a moisturizing day cream.  At night I cleanse, then scrub with a daily scrub to ensure all the makeup is off, then apply a moisturizing night cream.

On the weekend I go an extra step by doing a mineral mask treatment, which I follow up with a brighten serum to help keep my skin tone even and bright.

Here are the products I use in my current skincare regimen.

Clean & Clear morning burst facial Cleanser

This cleanser is perfect for my skin, it is oil free with vitamin E and ginseng.  I love that it lathers however it does not leave my skin feeling dry and tight once it is dry.  The tingling feel I get when I cleanse in the morning is heavenly; who doesn't need a slap to wake them up? This has being my favorite cleanser for quite awhile and will be for the foreseeable future.

Clearskin Cooling Toner

I love this toner because a little a long way.  It's main active ingredients is Salicylic Acid which is an acne fighting ingredient. My face responds well to this toner and helps to keep my oil balance in check.

Anew Vitale Day Cream

I love all things Anew, I truly believe that Avon has some of the best skincare products.  I like this moisturizer because it is very light and has a SPF 25 sunscreen.  I find that having a great moisturizer under your makeup actually improves the look of your makeup.

Neutrogena daily Scrub

This is a creamy gentle scrub leaves my face feeling smooth and soft.  I like that even though it is a scrub my face does not feeling raw, tender and dry after.

Anew Genics Treatment Cream

This is a nighttime moisturizing cream, which is meant to treat and repair the skin while you sleep.  It has a slight tingling effect so I normal wait a few minutes after my scrubbing session to apply.  I love that when I wake up in the morning my skin is looking and feeling refresh.

Clearskin Black Mineral mask

I use this mask weekly to maintain healthy pores and prevent blackheads.  It goes on black and turns gray as it drys; I like that it does not stiffen as it drys.  It does not dry my skin out but it is important to follow up with a moisturizer.

Anew Clinical brighten serum

As we age sometimes our skin tone changes and not always for the best.  I used this once weekly to help maintain and brighten my skin tone. It can be used daily or as often as you need it but I find that a little goes a long way.

Even though my regimen may seem complex to some, it works for me.  Therefore, the same holds true that you need to find what works best for you and stick with it. Your intake of water is very important to your overall health so don't forget to hydrate.

Wash Day- Moisture Moisture

Living in the northeast I have to deal with the extreme temperatures; however my hair has not gotten the memo.  For the past few weeks I have been struggling with the moisture balance of my hair.  Therefore , this week I after some research I decided to go an egg and honey treatment in an attempt to up the ante.

Here is how this week's wash day went;

Prepoo with my egg and oil mixture under a plastic cap and a scarf for one hour.  I spent a few days combing the interweb for a good recipe for the egg mixture but alas I gained enough information to formulate my own. The egg mixture consist of an egg, coconut oil and avocado oil. After allowing my hair to cool I rinsed with warm water to ensure I remove all the egg.

Shampooed with Creme of Nature red clover & aloe before rinsing with warm water.  After thoroughly rinsing all the shampoo it wrapped my head in a t-shirt to get rid of the excess water.

Deep conditioned with Crecepelo and Jamaican Black Castor Oil mixture under my conditioning cap for thirty minutes.  Watching Tv while washing one shair is not always a good idea.  I intended to let my hair cool for 10 minutes but it was three hours later before I rinsed the conditioner out with warmed water followed by cool water to closed the cuticles.

Leave-in and moisturizer- Applied Creme of Nature strength and shine leave in conditioner and allowed my hair to air dry.  Once my hair was about 90 percent dry I applied Ettenio moisture reign and left to fully air dry. Once it was dry I applied OGX coconut milk anti-breakage and blow dry the roots on cool help stretch them.  After blow dry I add a drop of Ettenio seal and shine serum to each section and set with roughly 15 1 1/2 inch perm rods.

I love how soft and moisturized my hair is; because even though I felt like I went through a wind tunnel while in the city my hair was still soft.  So soft that I could run my fingers through it without any problem.  I love the look from the perm rods but forgot to take pictures because I was running late for an interview.

What are some of the techniques you are using to improve your moisture balance?

Ever woke up with the premonition that your life was about to change? Well, I woke up on Monday with the feeling that it was going to be my last day working at my current job.  If I could pick the lotto numbers with such accuracy I would be an uber trillionaire.  Anyway, I was laid off my job on Tuesday; I'm a glass half full kind of girl so that is the opportunity to do something great.

Anyway here is a recap of my awesome week.

Exercise-

Monday- no exercise because I was anxious
Tuesday- I got laid off so I spent the time relaxing

Wednesday-  When you don't have to be at work at nine, what do you do? Well I went on a three mile run.  I think I may like running outdoors.  Did one hour body pump at the gym.

Thursday- Went a six mile run/walk; it was so freeing just me my music and the squirrels.
Friday- Ran five miles with an average of a  minutes mile.  I was just going enjoying the freedom and quiet of the cool morning.

Saturday- rest OMG, my legs were in hurt  city.
Sunday- rest

Even though I had something negative happened to me this week. I was able to run three days in a row and outdoors; how cool was that.  I know it won't last but it was great and I highly recommend it.

Menu-

- Whole baked chicken with red potatoes
- Quinoa with red kidney beans
- Barbeque chicken wings
- large garden salad
- sauteed spinach with cannellini beans.

My mom gave me the idea for making the spinach with the beans and I was pleasantly surprise how delicious it was.
